Key points
- Identify the actual business and exact assignment.
Start with a clearly defined assignment
A plumber should be able to explain what has been observed, what still needs checking and the proposed repair. Practical professional value also includes suitable components, agreement on the work, checks and an invoice. Insurance is a separate safeguard; it does not replace sound workmanship or guarantee that damage will never occur during or after the job.
Identify the business actually carrying out the work, particularly when the first contact is a platform. A proposal simply labelled ‘call-out’ can cover very different assignments: travel, diagnosis, repair or separate investigation. Our emergency quotation guide helps you clarify charges and authorisation before the work starts, rather than relying on a reassuring label alone.
Professional liability: check the contract’s scope
Professional liability insurance may cover consequences of damage connected with the insured activity, subject to the contract. It does not automatically pay for every leak following a visit. The activity, circumstances, exclusions and limits need to fit the incident. A liability policy is also different from a commercial promise to return and correct a problem free of charge.
Official business-insurance guidance distinguishes requirements according to activity from recommended insurance (Assurances de la société | Service Public Entreprendre). It does not establish that every small plumbing repair requires the same policy. For the proposed work, ask which cover applies and request evidence. An insurer’s logo, advertising phrase or membership of a network does not answer that question or establish the scope of an individual policy.
Decennial cover is not universal leak insurance
The French garantie décennale concerns construction liability within a defined legal framework. Service Public describes, in particular, damage affecting structural soundness or making the building unfit for its intended use, and a ten-year period running from acceptance of the works (Garantie décennale des constructeurs | Service Public). That duration does not turn a routine repair into qualifying construction work or establish coverage by itself.
Do not automatically treat a tap repair or replacement equipment in an existing building as falling within that framework. The nature of the work and damage matters, and particular cases require assessment under the applicable rules. Seek case-specific advice if a dispute arises. This article does not resolve the special legal treatment of equipment added to or replaced in an existing building.
Evidence to request before agreeing
Ask for a certificate identifying the business and insurer, contract number and relevant period. Check that the declared activities match the proposed work. For an operation within the decennial framework, the official model also addresses geographical scope, opening date of the works and relevant techniques. Service Public says that the certificate must be provided before the works and attached to quotations and invoices (Garantie décennale des constructeurs | Service Public ; Responsabilité décennale : modèle d'attestation d'assurance (contrat individuel) | Service Public Entreprendre).
A decennial certificate alone does not establish the scope of general professional liability cover. If the activity or assignment seems absent, request written clarification and, where needed, confirmation through independently checked insurer contact details. Keep the document with the quotation. We have not verified a TFK insurance certificate here: this is a verification guide, not certification of TFK’s individual policy.
Home insurance and aftercare are separate again
Your home policy addresses the damage and procedures covered by your own contract. It is not the contractor’s insurance. Finding the source, repairing the cause and restoring damage can be handled differently; report the facts without promising a neighbour that a particular insurer will necessarily pay (Assurance dégâts des eaux | Service Public). Our guide to delaying a repair explains why useful protective steps should not wait.
A contractor’s aftercare commitment is another distinct arrangement. TFK’s service page describes correction where the same problem returns because of a TFK error within a year, under the detailed service-page conditions (Water leak repair in Paris | TFK). That is not an insurance certificate, cover for every equipment defect or a general extension of the French decennial regime. Read the actual commitment rather than substituting a broader guarantee.
If damage appears after the visit
Keep people safe first and limit the flow only if it can be done without risk. Notify the contractor and your insurer. Retain the quotation, invoice, useful photographs and a timeline. Explain what has changed without immediately assigning fault. The fact that damage appears after an intervention does not by itself establish the contractor’s responsibility for that damage.
Ask about the proposed inspection, next steps and any information needed for the relevant insurance notification. A return visit to inspect, agreement to correct work and a compensation decision are different stages. If disagreement persists, seek appropriate support rather than relying on assumed cover. A precise record of the authorised work and observations is more useful than an unsupported promise.

Plan your leak repair
Want a visible leak repaired and clarity about the paperwork? Tell TFK the location, whether water is flowing and your neighbourhood. Ask for the scope, written quotation and insurance documents appropriate to the work before agreeing.
Frequently asked questions
Does every leak after work fall under decennial cover?
No. The work, damage and applicable conditions must be assessed; ‘plumbing’ alone is not enough .
Does DIY automatically invalidate home insurance?
No blanket rule of that kind is established here. Check the policy and do not undertake unsafe dismantling to avoid a visit.
