Key points

  • Choose with the person around a specific difficulty.
  • An access device is neither a personal alarm nor a guarantee of independent living.

1. Identify the actual difficulty

Ask the person to describe the sequence: finding the key, locating the keyhole, turning it, operating the handle and pushing the door. The proposed equipment may not address every step. If the door rubs or requires unusual force, have the mechanical problem assessed before adding a motor.

Separate physical difficulty from access organisation. For someone who already opens the door easily but needs to give keys to several relatives, permission management may be the main benefit. None of these situations supports a promise of greater independence for all older adults.

2. Try a control without imposing a phone

Nuki documents compatible accessories, including the Fob and keypad, without opening an app at every visit (Nuki App & Web ; Nuki — local access). A button may suit one person and a code another. Technical compatibility does not demonstrate ease of handling or the ability to remember a sequence.

Try the option with the person's usual glasses, lighting and habits. Can they find the control without help? Can they tell whether the action worked? Can they retry without a confusing series of operations? If it needs unwanted permanent assistance, reconsider it. Nuki still requires a smartphone with its app for initial setup and calibration (Nuki App & Web).

3. Agree on access for relatives and home visitors

Nuki supports individual permissions and access periods (Nuki App & Web). It may help to distinguish the relative who handles settings from visitors and regular home workers rather than share one access method indiscriminately. Agree with the occupant who receives which permissions and how to remove them when circumstances change.

Being technically able to open the door remotely is not, by itself, permission to enter. Agree on how visitors will announce themselves and obtain the person's agreement. Technology does not replace that relationship or the specific arrangements needed if someone cannot express their wishes.

4. Do not mistake the log for a personal alarm service

Nuki says its log records the time, user and function operated (Nuki — data protection). It does not tell you whether someone has fallen, left with another person or is well. No recorded action is not a diagnosis; a recorded action is not proof of safety. If the need is an alarm or health monitoring, seek an appropriate solution with qualified people.

Explain what relatives will be able to see. The French CNIL's principles of transparency, necessary data and limited retention provide guidance when organising information management for someone else (CNIL — RGPD), not blanket permission to monitor them. The occupant should understand the log's purpose and who consults it.

5. Make backup as understandable as everyday use

Who monitors power and updates? Who helps if the control goes missing? Agree on a main helper and a substitute, with short instructions chosen with the person. Avoid leaving them a list of options they cannot use independently.

Outside spare-key use depends on the cylinder: Nuki specifies an appropriate emergency function, which the cylinder supplied with the Ultra provides (Nuki Pro (5th Gen) ; Nuki Ultra). Have it checked on site without risking a lockout. A keypad or Fob may replace an unavailable phone but cannot replace power in the lock. If no realistic backup exists for this person, reconsider the project.

Assess the door and the preferred control

Tell TFK which action needs simplifying and which control you are considering, without sending medical records. With the occupant's agreement, door photos or a short WhatsApp video can support the assessment and quote. Installation only starts at €189 incl. VAT, using a customer-supplied Nuki; the final amount is quoted, with one year of installation and workmanship aftercare for defects attributable to TFK.

Frequently asked questions

Must an older adult know how to use an app?

Not necessarily for every opening: compatible accessories can be used. Someone must still handle initial setup and certain tasks with the Nuki app. That support should be agreed rather than assumed.

Is automatic opening always better?

No. Nuki offers Auto Unlock, but suitability depends on the person's understanding and tests in their own setup. A more predictable intentional control may be preferable; no feature guarantees independence.
