Key points

  • A useful feature must fit the whole access sequence.
  • Individual trials and backup matter as much as technical dimensions.

1. Break entry and exit into separate actions

Look separately at approaching the door, reaching the control, unlocking, operating the handle, moving the door leaf and passing through. Repeat the assessment for leaving. Avoiding a key-turning action can still leave difficulty pulling the door or moving backwards with a mobility aid.

Describe the limiting action without making a medical diagnosis: fine rotation, arm reach, reading a screen, holding a button or exerting force on the door. A motorised lock must not be presented as a powered door opener. If the need extends beyond locking, have the complete arrangement assessed by appropriate professionals; choosing a model is not enough.

2. Check the exact model's technical constraints

The current Pro guide describes mounting over the inside key, with maximum key thickness of 4 mm and protruding length of 37 mm (Nuki Pro — compatibility). Go can mount over a compatible key or knob (Nuki Go — compatibility). The European Ultra uses its supplied Universal Cylinder and has its own dimensional limits (Nuki Ultra ; Nuki Ultra — compatibility). A product photograph cannot resolve those differences.

For inward-opening doors, the reviewed guides require more than 30 mm from the keyhole centre to both the frame and the handle. For outward-opening doors, they specify more than 40 mm towards the frame and more than 30 mm towards the handle (Nuki Pro — compatibility ; Nuki Go — compatibility ; Nuki Ultra — compatibility). These are product-clearance dimensions, not accessible passage widths or regulatory approval. The device is intended for the inside face.

3. Compare controls in actual use

The app, Fob and compatible keypads are documented options (Nuki App & Web ; Nuki — local access), not interchangeable solutions for every person. Try the control from the user's normal seated or standing position, with their usual aids. Check reach, grip, readability and understanding of feedback.

If considering a fingerprint, verify the keypad model and test it rather than assume it is simpler. If choosing a phone, also check unlocking and handling that phone. Auto Unlock appearing among Nuki features (Nuki App & Web) does not remove the need to test its behaviour or provide an understood fallback control.

4. Apply the same standard to backup entry

A theoretical spare key is not useful if the person cannot operate it and nobody is arranged to help. Nuki documents outside key use with an appropriate emergency-function cylinder; the Ultra includes one (Nuki Pro (5th Gen) ; Nuki Ultra). Have that capability checked without creating a lockout risk.

Separate a lost phone, unavailable accessory, Internet outage and a lock with no power. Another electronic control does not solve that last problem. Agree on reachable assistance, responsibility for power and updates, and the response to failure. Nuki requires a smartphone with its app for initial setup and certain tasks (Nuki App & Web).

5. Decide from trials, not an accessibility label

A useful trial produces specific observations: the person reaches the control, understands its state, moves the door and passes through without additional unplanned assistance. Check leaving too, and consider normal tiredness without creating risks or demanding painful effort. If any stage fails, stop the trial and reconsider the arrangement.

These checks are a selection method, not accessibility certification or medical advice. The reviewed manufacturer sources do not establish suitability for every disability. For budgeting, TFK offers installation only from €189 incl. VAT, with your own hardware, following a video assessment or WhatsApp photos; the final amount and necessary work are specified in the quote (TFK — Nuki installation).

Have your door and the difficult action assessed

Tell TFK the proposed model, your Paris area and the access action you want to simplify. Door photos or a WhatsApp video made without risky effort can support the assessment; no medical records or codes are needed. Installation only starts at €189 incl. VAT, using a customer-supplied Nuki, with the final amount quoted after assessment; one year of installation and workmanship aftercare covers defects attributable to TFK.

Frequently asked questions

Will the lock move the door leaf for me?

Do not assume so. Controlling locking is not the same as powering the physical opening of a door. The handle, force needed and passage must be assessed separately.

Does compatible mean accessible for me?

No. Nuki's guides cover matters including cylinders and clearances. Your use also depends on possible movements, the chosen control and realistic backup. This article establishes no French PMR accessibility compliance.
