Key points
- If someone is in immediate danger, call the emergency services on 112 without waiting for your host or a tradesperson.
- An unresponsive host does not authorise entry when access rights are unconfirmed, or any destructive work.
- Keep three decisions separate: the right to enter, the work that is authorised, and who places the order and pays.
First: an inconvenient wait or an immediate danger?
A child locked inside alone, someone in distress, a fire or a medical danger must not wait for a host to reply. Call 112, give the exact address, floor, door and nature of the danger, and follow the emergency operator’s instructions. A locksmith is not a substitute for emergency services.
If there is no immediate danger, take your group somewhere safe and accessible, particularly at night or if anyone is vulnerable. Keep a working phone available and tell your host where you are waiting. Do not try to enter through a window, balcony or neighbouring property, and do not force the lock.
Establish what is preventing access before requesting an opening
Read the private booking instructions again: address, building, floor, check-in time and key collection arrangements. Check that you are at the property you booked. A building entrance, an inaccessible key safe, an unresponsive keypad and the apartment door are different problems and may require different people, not the same repair.
- At check-in, missing instructions or a rejected code may simply need your host to correct them, without any work on the door.
- A door that closed with the keys inside may be shut on its latch rather than locked with a key. Describe what happened without claiming a diagnosis.
- A key that will not turn, a door known to be locked with a key or a broken key needs a different assessment. Stop repeated attempts.
For a door that has genuinely slammed shut, the first-response guide to a slammed door (in French) provides additional checks, not instructions for bypassing access controls.
Send your host a message they can act on
Write through the booking’s messaging system, then try the phone number or property manager named in the instructions. Make sure the contact really is the one your host provided. Ask for an access solution and the name of the person authorised to decide: a spare key, a representative attending or a tradesperson instructed by the host. Summarise any telephone agreement in writing afterwards.
Message to adapt: “We have been outside the booked property since [time], at [building/floor]. [Instructions unavailable / door closed / key will not turn]. [Anyone inside: yes/no; any danger]. You can reach us privately on [number]. Please confirm the correct access procedure, whether a spare is available, and who can authorise a call-out and its budget.”
A closely framed photo of the door or fault may help. Never publish an entry code, the precise location of a spare, an identity document or a picture of a key in a public review or on social media.
If your host stays unavailable: escalate to support, not assumed permission
Use the help option within your Airbnb reservation and explain when access failed, how you tried to reach your host and what the consequences are. Airbnb advises documenting the problem, contacting the host and seeking its help if the host does not respond or cannot resolve it. Its help pages state that issues should be reported within 72 hours of discovery; this is not an instruction to wait or permission to carry out work. Report the lockout now.
Ask which options can be considered for your reservation: restoring access, alternative accommodation or a refund request. Applicable terms, assessment of the issue and, for rebooking, availability all matter. A locksmith’s bill is not automatically reimbursed. Airbnb describes AirCover for guests as a support programme, not an insurance policy.
Platform support does not, on its own, establish your right to enter or provide blanket authority to alter the lock. Without verifiable agreement, arrange a safe place to wait or discuss accommodation with support rather than forcing entry.
Before a call-out: verify access rights and set limits on the work
Tell the locksmith that you are a guest, not the owner. Ask what evidence is needed to check your current occupancy and right of access. A current booking, identity checked privately and confirmation from the host or their representative may help, but are not guaranteed to be sufficient in every case. If the property, dates or requesting person’s authority remain uncertain, the opening must be put on hold. Do not ask a neighbour to vouch for facts they cannot know.
Get written confirmation of the authorised scope: assessment, opening appropriate to the door and limits on the work. Permission to investigate a non-destructive solution is not permission to drill, replace a cylinder or change the lock. If the assessment calls for different work, obtain fresh agreement on the method and price before proceeding. No reply is not consent. Immediate danger is a matter for the emergency services, not an exception improvised by the guest.
Agree who orders and who pays before accepting the quote
Request a written quote before work starts, identifying the business, customer, address, proposed work, travel charge, labour, any parts, surcharges and total including tax. French public guidance lists locksmith work among services requiring a prior quote. Also ask about the conditions and charges for a call-out without an opening if the evidence does not allow the locksmith to proceed.
Distinguish the person accepting the order, the invoice recipient, whoever pays immediately and anyone agreeing to reimburse them later. If you place the order yourself, do not assume your host or Airbnb will take over the bill. Technical permission from your host is not necessarily a financial commitment. Keep the accepted quote, any payment agreement, the invoice and proof of payment. If costs are disputed, request a documented explanation without accepting liability that has not been established.
The emergency locksmith quote guide (in French) explains what to check. This article does not imply a commercial relationship or partnership with Airbnb.
After access is restored: prevent a repeat lockout
With the locksmith or your host’s representative, check that the door operates normally without locking yourself out again. Confirm how it should be closed, how keys are handed over and, if a part was replaced with permission, who receives the new keys. Send your host a short record: the confirmed cause or any remaining uncertainty, work completed, whether the property closes securely and the documents supplied.
If access could not be restored, record why and ask your host or platform support for a workable stay arrangement. Do not treat accommodation you book independently as already approved for reimbursement. Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait for my host to reply?
There is no universal waiting period after which an opening becomes authorised. Document and report the problem promptly, contact support if your host remains unavailable and wait somewhere safe. In immediate danger, call the emergency services without waiting.
Is my Airbnb booking confirmation enough for a locksmith?
It can help establish a current stay, but does not by itself confirm the correct door or authority to alter the lock. The professional needs to establish a coherent right of access. If that remains uncertain, the opening must be put on hold.
Does a rejected check-in code justify replacing the lock?
No. A rejected code or missing instructions should first be checked with your host or their representative. Replacement requires an assessment, appropriate authorisation and an agreed quote; it may not solve the underlying access problem.
Will Airbnb pay the locksmith if my host does not respond?
Not automatically. Stay support and any refund decision depend on the applicable terms and assessment of your case. Obtain explicit confirmation of any proposed cost coverage, and distinguish that process from the order you place with the tradesperson.
Can I authorise drilling because my belongings are inside?
Having belongings inside is not permission for destructive work. Have your access rights checked and obtain approval from the authorised person for any new method or replacement part. If a person inside is in danger, contact the emergency services.
