Key points

  • Separate local viewing, remote video and lock operation.
  • Resolve privacy before choosing technical specifications.

1. Three devices with different jobs

A non-connected digital viewer replaces the eyepiece with an indoor display. Yale’s French product page says its 500 works independently without Internet or network configuration (Judas de porte numérique - Série 500 - Blanc). It helps someone look from inside the home, but does not send that view to a distant relative. Digital does not necessarily mean connected.

A connected peephole combines a camera through the peephole opening with remote app access. EZVIZ documents an indoor screen, live app viewing and visitor-triggered video calls for the DP2C (EZVIZ - L’écosystème de la maison connectée). A video doorbell is installed at the entrance: it need not use the peephole opening or include an indoor screen. Some products combine both roles. Compare mounting arrangements and actual functions rather than relying on a product label.

2. The benefits: viewing differently and answering remotely

A display may avoid bending towards an eyepiece. A video call may let you ask a delivery driver to wait or notify the occupant before a visit. These are useful possibilities, not guaranteed accessibility benefits. Try the screen height, readability, lighting and sound with the actual person who will use it.

For family help at a distance, separate three steps: viewing, speaking and deciding whether to unlock. A camera does not automatically operate a lock. An image or uniform does not establish identity or permission to enter: confirm an expected visit through a known contact channel. If you only need to see from indoors, remote access may create more administration than convenience.

3. The drawback: a wide view may extend beyond your property

For homes in France, the CNIL says private individuals may film only inside their own property and must not film the public highway. Neighbours’, visitors’ and passers-by’s privacy must be respected (La vidéosurveillance, vidéoprotection – chez soi | CNIL). A manufacturer’s claim that a product suits apartments is not permission to capture a shared corridor or a neighbour’s door.

A manually requested live display and automatic recording with alerts are not identical arrangements. However, saying that you do not record is not enough to establish that every camera view of a landing is lawful. The sources checked do not settle every live-view peephole configuration. Before buying for a co-owned building, describe the view, triggers, audio, viewers and storage to the building manager, and seek legal or CNIL guidance where needed. The CNIL apartment-building factsheet explicitly labels itself obsolete; we do not use it as current installation permission (La vidéosurveillance – vidéoprotection dans les immeubles d'habitation | CNIL). If lawful coverage has not been established, postpone the camera.

4. Convenience depends on networking and maintenance

The DP2C uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a rechargeable battery (EZVIZ - L’écosystème de la maison connectée). Check reception with the door closed, not just beside the router. An Internet failure may disable remote help; a flat battery may disable the device. Do not assume how your exact model behaves offline: check its documentation and perform a safe trial.

Use a unique password, available account protections and updated devices. Use individual permissions where supported; if they are unavailable, reconsider sharing rather than handing out an administrator account. Disable unnecessary functions. Local memory reduces reliance on remote storage, but does not remove copying risks or privacy responsibilities.

5. Compare the full cost and retain a simple fallback

Allow for the device, a memory card, battery replacement or charging and any cloud service. For the DP2C, EZVIZ says local cards are purchased separately and cloud availability varies by market (EZVIZ - L’écosystème de la maison connectée). Check subscription terms and prices before committing. Neither local storage nor connectivity proves that every feature is free.

Keep a way to answer or refuse a visit when the app is unavailable. If you add a Nuki, consider its power, permissions and backup key independently: a peephole is not a mechanical fallback. We are not quoting a TFK camera-fitting service. For a separate project to fit your own Nuki, the service page lists installation only from €189 including VAT, quoted after assessment (Nuki smart lock installation in Paris | TFK).

6. Our decision rule

Choose a local display when the problem is simply seeing from indoors. Consider a connected peephole if answering remotely provides real value, the field of view is acceptable and someone will maintain it. Decline or postpone it if the occupant does not want it, shared areas would be monitored without an established lawful framework, or nobody understands the fallback. A simpler device can be the better outcome.

Are you also considering a Nuki for this door?

For the lock installation only, tell TFK your Paris area, your customer-supplied Nuki model and intended use. A video assessment or general door photos on WhatsApp can support the diagnosis and quote; do not send codes or reproducible key details. Installation only starts at €189 incl. VAT; the final price is quoted, with one year of installation and workmanship aftercare for defects attributable to TFK. This is not a peephole installation price.

Frequently asked questions

Does a screen-based peephole always work with a phone?

No. Yale explicitly describes the 500 as standalone and without Internet. A screen does not establish remote functionality.

May I film the shared landing if I do not record?

Do not assume so. Requested live viewing differs from recording, but the checked sources do not give blanket permission for a peephole filming shared areas. Have the specific configuration assessed.
