Key points
- An opened door does not mean the fault is repaired or the entire lock needs replacement.
- Before irreversible work, ask why it is needed, what suitable alternatives exist and how the door will be secured afterwards.
- The right to enter, authority to commission work and responsibility for payment require separate checks.
Your situation: useful guide and relevant service
These pointers help frame your request; they are not a remote diagnosis or an automatic recommendation to replace parts. Call 112 in an immediate emergency.
- Door closed without turning the key → First steps for a slammed door → Slammed-door service.
- Door locked with a key; opening method unclear → Questions before drilling → Locked-door service.
- Key spins in the lock → Clarify cylinder and lock options → Lock replacement, if justified by diagnosis.
Describe the problem without creating another one
Say whether the door is open or shut, whether you know it was locked, whether the key is available and what happened during its last normal use. Mention earlier resistance, an unusual handle movement or a recent impact. These are observations, not tests to repeat. Stop if the key resists; do not force the handle or door or dismantle anything.
A door that merely shut behind you calls for the first steps for a slammed door; a broken key in the lock needs different precautions. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 112 rather than waiting for an ordinary locksmith visit. Otherwise arrange somewhere safe to wait, without attempting access through a window or balcony.
Separate four decisions
- Access: regain legitimate entry. Opening does not establish that the door can then close and lock normally.
- Diagnosis: identify the cause and any checks still needed once the door is accessible.
- Repair: correct an identified fault, with an agreed result and stated limitations.
- Equipment: replace a component or choose a security upgrade; an upgrade is not automatically necessary to resolve the incident.
Ask: ‘What can you establish before opening, and what will need checking afterwards?’ If the answer depends on an inaccessible mechanism, have that uncertainty and the stopping point before further work explained.
Before irreversible work
Ask which component will be affected, which observations justify the proposed work and what less destructive options suit this particular door, including their limits. Non-destructive opening is not guaranteed; drilling is not automatically improper. The professional must explain the choice, and your consent does not replace their diagnosis.
Ask what will become unusable, how the property can be secured afterwards and which replacement parts would be needed. The questions before drilling guide develops this decision point. If the method or scope changes, pause for an updated written proposal and acceptance, rather than discovering an extra charge afterwards.
Choose follow-up based on the symptom
A key spinning without engaging the lock does not identify a faulty cylinder on its own: ask which connection or mechanism is affected. A door becoming hard to close warrants examination of the closure and its surroundings, not just a proposal for a new lock.
After opening, distinguish what restored entry from what corrected the fault. If keys were lost or stolen, the question of who might still have access belongs in the lost keys and cylinder guide: that is a separate security concern, not necessarily a mechanical failure.
Establish who decides and the limits
The professional must be able to verify legitimate access to the correct door. A tenant can report the fault and arrange a request, but should not assume the landlord will reimburse it. Notify the landlord about major repairs or deterioration through age; minor repairs and routine upkeep fall into a different category under French rules. The established cause matters more than the label ‘emergency’. Ownership alone does not allow entry into an occupied home without consent. A manager must check their mandate, spending limit and covered equipment; shared building equipment requires the authorised building contact.
For a consumer in France, request a detailed prior quote covering travel, diagnosis, opening, repair, parts, surcharges and taxes. Ask about charges if opening fails or you decline further work; do not assume travel is free. The locksmith quote guide covers the details to check. Business orders also need a written scope, without automatically applying every consumer rule. An unavailable decision-maker does not authorise replacement outside the mandate.
Close the access job and plan the next step
Request a record separating access regained, cause identified, repair completed and any follow-up. Have normal operation and secure closure explained without risking another lockout; report any incomplete result. Keep the accepted quote, authorisations and invoice, and ask to retain replaced parts if you wish. Do not publicly post photographs of keys, security details or proof of occupancy.
If access rights are uncertain, the decision-maker is unavailable or the plan to secure the door is unexplained, pause the decision and contact an authorised person. To describe a locked door or a blockage that still needs assessment, use the locked-door service page to present the request, without assuming a method, arrival time or availability.

Frequently asked questions
Does opening always include repairing the fault?
No. Establish what is being commissioned and the expected outcome. An accessible door may still have a closure fault; repair or replacement depends on diagnosis and an accepted price.
Should I always refuse drilling?
No. The method depends on the door, lock and their condition. Ask for the justification, realistic alternatives, expected damage and how security will be restored. Pause if these points or the authorisation remain unclear.
Is a photograph enough to decide what needs replacing?
No. A privately shared photograph without access secrets may help prepare a visit, but cannot establish internal operation or definitively identify the faulty part.
Will the landlord pay if I am renting?
Not automatically. Under French rules, upkeep, minor repairs, ageing and damage need to be distinguished. Notify the landlord, document the cause and seek agreement on payment; commissioning work alone does not create a right to reimbursement.
