Key points
- A spare key restores access, but does not make the missing key unusable.
- If the keys can be linked to your home, arrange to secure it promptly and notify your insurer.
- Replacing the cylinder may be enough, depending on the model; ask for opening, parts and fitting to be itemised separately in the quote.
Three situations to help you decide without panicking
The keys have probably been left with someone you know or in a safe place
Check the last places you visited and whether a trusted person has a spare. If you recover the keys and have good reason to believe they never left a safe place, replacement is not an obvious necessity. This is still an assessment of the circumstances, not a guarantee that no copy has been made.
The keys are lost, but there is no address or identifying feature
The link to your home is less obvious, but the risk is not zero: losing keys outside your door is not the same as losing them far from home. Note where and when the keys were last seen, and what they open. If you cannot find them or still have doubts, ask for advice on replacing the cylinder.
The keys were stolen with an address, or someone knows which door they open
Do not settle for having a spare made. Contact a locksmith promptly to secure the lock, then ask your insurer for its assistance instructions. If the keys were stolen, file a police report. If a break-in is in progress or you are being threatened, get to safety and call the police on 17 or 112 in France: personal safety comes before speaking to a tradesperson.
Getting back inside and making the missing key unusable are two different needs
A spare key may let you get back inside without a call-out. A locksmith may need to open the door if you are locked out. Neither option disables the missing keys: as long as the locking system stays the same, they may still work.
Tell the professional whether you are outside, whether the door is locked and whether a spare exists. Have evidence ready to show that you are entitled to access the property. Do not try to force the door, dismantle the mechanism or get in through a window. This guide covers the risks associated with lost keys, not techniques for opening doors.
If the door has simply shut with your keys still inside, that is a different situation: see our guide to the first steps when a door shuts behind you.
Cylinder, complete lock or door: what actually needs replacing?
On many models, the cylinder is the part into which you insert the key. Where it can be replaced separately and the rest of the mechanism is in good condition, replacing it may give you a new set of keys without changing the entire lock. Not all systems allow this in the same way.
Ask the locksmith to explain compatibility with the lock, the dimensions, existing security features and any requirements in your insurance policy. A multipoint lock does not, on its own, mean every locking point must be replaced. Conversely, a damaged mechanism or a particular system may require a different solution: ask for an explanation before agreeing.
Losing your keys does not automatically mean replacing the door. Ask for separate prices for any opening work, the chosen cylinder or lock, the keys supplied and fitting. The lock replacement page explains the service; the model still needs to be assessed.
Building access fob, shared key or rented home: who should you notify?
A set of keys may open several entrances: your home, the entrance hall, a cellar, a garage or a letterbox. Changing your home's cylinder does not address those other access points. For a lost fob, notify the caretaker or the syndic, the managing agent of a French co-owned building, and ask whether it can be deactivated. If a shared mechanical key is lost, report it: you cannot decide alone to replace a communal lock.
If you are a tenant, inform the landlord or letting agency, particularly if a key also opens communal areas or the lock has been damaged. France's Service Public website lists replacing lost keys among tenant repairs; this does not mean tenants must pay for every repair following a theft or every lock failure. The cause and circumstances matter. ADIL, the local housing information agency, can help if there is a disagreement.
If the building uses a master-key system or a key duplication card, ask the managing agent about the procedure before ordering an incompatible part. Do not post a clear photo of the keys, card or codes on social media.
Insurance and quotes: questions to ask before agreeing
Call your policy's assistance service if the situation allows, without delaying necessary security measures. Ask whether prior authorisation or a designated contractor is required, which items are covered and which documents to keep. Lost keys, stolen keys and burglary are not interchangeable situations.
Service Public explains that theft cover depends on the policy. Theft committed using stolen or lost keys may be covered if the policy provides for that situation; this does not guarantee reimbursement for a precautionary cylinder replacement. Do not assume a new cylinder will be reimbursed simply because you have home insurance. In the event of theft, notify your insurer as soon as you discover it and check the policy's reporting deadline, without waiting to gather every document.
- Before the call-out: charges, cancellation terms and any fees if you decline the work.
- Before work begins: the agreed solution, part references, number of keys, fitting and total including tax.
- If the diagnosis changes: an explanation and agreement on the revised scope before the affected work begins.
- After the work: an itemised invoice, references and evidence of the security measures taken; for theft, the acknowledgement of your police report.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Useful answers for your situation
I have a spare: do I still need to change the cylinder?
The spare lets you get inside, but the missing key remains usable. The decision depends on the risk of it being linked to your home, where it was lost and the circumstances. Theft involving an address warrants prompt security measures.
Does a reinforced security door mean everything must be replaced?
No, not simply because the keys are lost. The solution depends on the lock and cylinder model. Have compatibility checked and ask for a justification if complete replacement is proposed.
Does deactivating the fob deal with the whole set of keys?
No. It only affects the fob, if the system allows deactivation. Mechanical keys for your home and other entrances remain a separate issue to raise with the professional or managing agent.
Does insurance automatically pay after keys are stolen?
No. Check the cover, assistance service, exclusions, limits and required documents. Stolen keys alone do not establish that replacement is covered.
