Key points
- Stop trying to turn or extract the fragment; do not insert tools, another key or any product, and keep the broken-off piece.
- Distinguish gaining access, extracting the fragment, replacing the cylinder and replacing the wider lock mechanism; a broken key alone does not justify full replacement.
- Ask for a written quote defining the scope, any charges if you decline further work, and a revised agreement before additional work starts.
What should you do immediately without making the jam worse?
Do not try to extract the fragment, insert any tool or another key into the keyway, or add any product. Keep the broken-off part you are holding: you can show it to the professional without trying to put it back.
If the door is open, avoid closing it before the assessment and stay nearby if the premises need watching. If it is closed, do not keep trying. Do not seek another way in through a window or an elevated route.
If someone is in immediate danger or cannot evacuate in the face of danger, call 112 without waiting for a locksmith.
- A visible fragment alone does not mean extraction will be possible.
- Gaining access to the home and restoring the lock to working order are two separate needs.
- No photo can guarantee that the work will be completed without damage.
Door open, closed or key already turned: what should you specify?
The door is open
Mention this at the first contact. The task is then to restore operation; opening the home is not necessary. Photograph only parts that are already accessible, without dismantling anything.
The door is closed
Say whether you are locked out or stuck inside and whether you had locked the door before the incident. If you do not know, say so. A closed door is not necessarily locked, and a broken key does not settle that question.
The key had started to turn
Describe what happened just before it broke: insertion, the start of turning or an attempt to remove it. Do not try to return it to any position. Also say whether the lock had already been stiff, without assuming the cause.
Extraction, cylinder or lock: three different scopes of work
Extracting the fragment
This means removing the part left inside the cylinder. It may be enough if the professional finds that everything works correctly afterwards. However, removing the fragment does not necessarily resolve the fault that preceded the break. Ask what will be checked after extraction and what happens if extraction is not enough.
Replacing the cylinder
The cylinder, also called the lock barrel, is the part the key goes into. Depending on the configuration and diagnosis, it may be replaceable without changing the entire mechanism. Compatibility cannot be judged by appearance: the model reference, dimensions and configuration must be checked before fitting.
A more extensive replacement
This may be proposed if the mechanism is damaged or a limited repair is unsuitable. Ask which component makes this necessary and what other options have been considered. Neither a broken key nor the number of locking points, on its own, justifies a remote conclusion.
To understand the related service, see the cylinder or lock replacement page. These possibilities are not a diagnosis of your door.
Useful information to prepare before the visit
Prepare your address, access details and a brief description: door open or closed, locked status known or uncertain, when the key broke, and whether a fragment is visible without touching it. Mention any attempts already made and any product already used.
General photos of the lock and visible markings can help prepare the discussion. Do not send a key code, ownership card or detailed photo that could allow the key to be copied without being asked. An unknown model reference can remain unknown until the on-site check.
If access is blocked, the locked door page explains the distinction between opening the door and any parts that may be needed. It does not establish which method your broken key will require.
What should you ask about the quote, and when is fresh agreement needed?
France’s Service Public guidance on home repair call-outs requires a quote before work begins. Ask for call-out charges, access or opening if necessary, proposed extraction, any replacement part and fitting to be itemised separately. Time-of-day conditions and exclusions must be clear before you agree.
- Exactly what outcome does the proposed service cover?
- What still needs to be checked on site?
- What charges will I still owe if I decline further work?
- If extraction is not enough, what scope of work will be proposed?
- Which model or part is being replaced, and why?
If the diagnosis leads to a cylinder replacement or work not included in your initial agreement, ask for a supplementary or revised quote before that work begins. An additional cost may be justified; it must be explained and accepted, not discovered on the invoice.
At TFK, the quote is confirmed in writing before you agree. Any change involving an additional cost requires your agreement. The conditions that apply if you decline work after the call-out should be clarified before the visit.
Assistance cover and the end of the visit: what should you keep?
If your policy includes locksmith assistance, contact the assistance service before booking the work whenever the situation allows. Check whether prior approval is required, which items are covered and what limits or excesses apply. Having assistance cover does not prove that this broken key will be covered.
Keep the accepted quote, correspondence about changes and the itemised invoice. Ask to keep replaced parts if they could be useful for your claim. Before the professional leaves, ask them to explain the outcome, the checks carried out and any remaining caveats.
To prepare a quote with TFK, describe the problem on WhatsApp. You can also call TFK, with no requirement for photos or a video call.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Useful answers for your situation
Does successful extraction always avoid replacing the cylinder?
No. The fragment may be removed while the cylinder or mechanism still has a fault. Replacement must be based on the checks performed, not simply on the fact that a fragment was initially present.
Why is a photo not enough to confirm the repair needed?
It shows the visible configuration, but not necessarily the internal condition or how the mechanism operates. It helps prepare the discussion; some checks still need to be carried out on site.
What if the key is intact but turns without engaging the lock?
Describe that symptom as it is: this is not a broken-key extraction. Stop trying and request an assessment of how the lock operates before choosing a part or authorising replacement.
