Key points
- Rotation without an apparent effect is a symptom, not proof that a particular component has failed.
- Opening, diagnosis and replacement need separate objectives and prices.
- Do not keep turning the key: arrange assessment and make the limits of authorisation clear.
Describe what happened without repeating it
Report the last normal use: whether the door was open or shut at the time, the usual key or a spare, sudden symptoms or earlier resistance, and recent work or impact. Distinguish ‘the key turns’ from ‘the door will not open’ and ‘I can no longer lock it’. Say when you do not know. Do not keep rotating the key, try other tools or dismantle the cylinder.
If the door is already open, do not close it to reproduce the fault: avoid another lockout while keeping a safe exit available. Do not prop a fire door or shared door open. If the property cannot be secured, say so to arrange prompt attention. For immediate danger to a person, call 112.
Ask which connection is no longer working
The cylinder receives the key; the lock and its working parts secure the closure; a connection normally transmits movement. Depending on the equipment, a fault may involve the cylinder, that transmission or the lock mechanism. These are categories of possible causes, not conclusions to draw from this symptom alone. A photograph cannot show internal operation.
Ask: ‘What establishes that this component is at fault? What still needs checking once the door is accessible?’ The opening and replacement options guide helps keep access, diagnosis, repair and equipment decisions separate.
If the door is shut, define the access job
Have the opening scope explained before selecting a repair. The professional must verify the right to enter and assess the door and its condition. No non-destructive method can be promised from the description ‘the key spins’ alone.
If irreversible work is proposed, ask about its justification, suitable alternatives, affected components and restored security: the questions before drilling guide covers these points. If the mechanism can only be examined after opening, agree a pause to explain new findings before any additional replacement. Successful opening does not establish that the fault is repaired.
Cylinder, lock or upgrade: ask for the reason
For a cylinder-only proposal, ask why the rest of the mechanism is considered functional and how compatibility will be confirmed. For a complete lock, ask which additional fault requires that scope and whether a targeted repair is suitable. Do not choose either the smallest or largest job on principle: the scope should follow the findings.
A security upgrade is an equipment choice separate from restoring working order. Have relevant specifications, supply, installation, any work on the door and key handover detailed, without publicly sharing key photographs or security information. If the door previously rubbed or was hard to close, mention that history: the hard-to-close door guide helps avoid overlooking the lock’s surroundings.
Limit the quote and identify who authorises
Request a prior quote distinguishing travel, diagnosis, access, the part, installation, surcharges and taxes, plus charges if you accept no repair. Do not assume travel or diagnosis is free. New findings require an updated scope and price accepted before work. The locksmith quote guide explains checks for consumers in France; not all those rules automatically apply to business orders.
Tenants should notify the landlord about major repairs or faults caused by ageing; routine upkeep and minor repairs fall into a different category under French rules. An urgent failure does not automatically make the landlord liable for the invoice. Owners must respect the occupant’s access rights. Managers must check their mandate and spending limit, particularly for shared equipment. Pause replacement if access rights or authority are uncertain, or if the decision-maker is unreachable for work beyond an existing delegation.
Clarify what has been restored
Request a work record stating the diagnosed cause, replaced parts and remaining limitations. Have normal use and the professional’s closure checks explained without causing another lockout. After authorised replacement, arrange key handover, keep the quote and invoice and request removed parts if desired. A temporary solution needs explicit limits and follow-up.
To discuss repair or replacement that still needs diagnosis, use the lock replacement page. This contact route does not mean complete replacement is necessary or availability is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
Does a turning key prove the cylinder is broken?
No. The symptom can involve different parts of the closure system. An appropriate on-site diagnosis is needed; a photograph or description alone cannot identify the component.
Does the entire lock always need replacing?
No. Ask what fault was identified and why a targeted repair or cylinder alone would or would not work. Complete replacement may be justified, but it does not follow automatically from a spinning key.
Can I keep turning it to try to release the door?
Avoid repeated attempts and do not add force or tools. Describe what you have already observed. Do not close an open door to test it and do not prop a fire door open.
Can I order the part while the landlord is not answering?
Do not assume authority or reimbursement. Check your power to commission the work and the agreement needed for that scope. If replacement falls outside your mandate, pause and seek an authorised contact; immediate danger requires calling 112.
