Key points
- Stop flushing and do not add water or products; closing the toilet supply valve cannot stop backflow from the building’s drains.
- If drain cleaner has been used, do not plunge, dismantle anything or add another product; tell the professional exactly what was used.
- Stop all attempts if the level is high or rising on its own, several drains are affected or the toilet has a macerator; alert the building manager where relevant.
The first few minutes: stop adding to the problem
Flushing again could make the bowl overflow. Tell other occupants not to use the toilet.
If water is still entering from the cistern, close only the toilet’s shut-off valve, provided you can identify it and reach it safely. Turn it gently by hand. If it resists, leaks or cannot be reached, do not persist: do not use tools, dismantle anything or remove a concealed flush plate.
Closing this valve does not stop backflow from the building. If the water rises when the toilet is not being used, notify the professional and the caretaker or building’s managing agent (syndic).
Water on the floor or a product already added: limits you must not cross
Avoid all contact with wastewater. Do not handle sockets, extension leads or appliances exposed to water. Only attempt to switch off the electricity from a dry location, using a dry control that is safe to reach; otherwise, keep your distance. If people are in immediate danger, call the French emergency services on 18 or 112.
A drain cleaner has already been used
Do not add anything, even another product described as natural. Never mix drain cleaner, bleach, acid or any other cleaning product. Do not use a plunger or dismantle anything: splashes of the liquid present may be dangerous.
Keep the packaging or a photo of the label, without putting yourself at risk. Provide the product name, approximate quantity and time of use before any work begins. If there are splashes, you feel unwell or irritating fumes are present, move away and seek medical help; do not try to neutralise the product.
One toilet or several drains affected? Observe without testing
Think back to symptoms you have already noticed: a slow-draining basin before the incident, a shower backing up, unusual noises or another affected toilet. Do not turn on taps to check or start a washing machine: these tests add water when you do not know whether it can drain away.
- Only the toilet seems affected: a local blockage is possible, but this does not establish its location or cause.
- Several fixtures are backing up or draining poorly: stop using them and notify the professional. In an apartment building, also alert the caretaker or managing agent.
- Neighbours report the same problem: pass on the information. It calls for coordination, not a definite diagnosis of a blocked shared waste stack.
When should you stop all attempts and call?
Request professional help if the level stays close to the rim, rises on its own, an object may have fallen into the bowl, a leak appears at the toilet’s base or the problem keeps coming back. A temporary return to a low level does not prove that the drain is clear.
Also stop if a product has already been poured in, several fixtures are affected or you have a macerator toilet. Do not open the macerator or handle its electrical components. Simply tell the professional what type of installation you have.
Do not use a plunger when the water in the bowl is rising: avoid splashes. Do not use boiling water, a coat hanger, a drain snake or a high-pressure device. Do not remove the toilet bowl or force a valve.
What information should you prepare before drain unblocking?
A safely taken photo of the toilet can help; do not dismantle anything or flush again to make a video. You can also call without a photo.
- Your address, floor and access details.
- The current water level: high, stable, fallen or rising without use.
- Other drains already affected and any information from neighbours.
- The type of toilet: standard, wall-hung or with a macerator, if you know.
- Attempts already made, any suspected object and every product used.
For a drainage problem, the service to consider is drain unblocking. Ask about the proposed scope and request a quote before agreeing. Several affected fixtures may require further checks; do not assume that work on the shared waste stack or specialist equipment is included.
What if the problem is the flush instead?
A constant filling noise or a continuous trickle into the bowl, without a rising level or any observed drainage problem, may point to a flush issue. This alone does not identify a faulty part.
In that case, the toilet repair page is a closer match than drain unblocking. Describe the symptom without dismantling the mechanism. If the level is also rising, report both facts rather than choosing a repair yourself. A leak onto the floor should also be mentioned separately.
Who should you notify, and who pays?
If you are a tenant, notify your landlord or letting agency, especially if the problem recurs or appears to extend beyond the toilet. France’s Service Public includes clearing blockages and certain minor repairs within tenant maintenance duties. This does not mean that every blocked toilet is automatically the tenant’s financial responsibility: the cause, age-related deterioration and any involvement of a communal installation must be assessed.
ANIL explains that repairs caused by natural wear are the landlord’s responsibility under French tenancy rules. Ask for the findings to be described in the work documents. If there is a disagreement, seek advice from your local ADIL housing advice agency rather than drawing a conclusion from the symptom alone.
If the overflow has damaged your home or a neighbour’s, contact your insurer promptly and keep photos and supporting documents. Compensation for damage and payment for drain unblocking are separate matters and depend in particular on the policy. Do not start restoring affected surfaces without the insurer’s instructions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Useful answers for your situation
The water has gone down: can I flush to check?
Do not perform this test while drainage remains uncertain. A drop in level can be temporary. Report how it has changed and avoid adding water, especially after a near-overflow or a recurring incident.
Is closing the toilet valve enough to prevent any overflow?
No. It limits water entering the cistern, but does not unblock the pipe or prevent backflow from the building. If the level rises without use, stop your attempts and alert the professional as well as the caretaker or managing agent.
I have already poured in drain cleaner: what should I tell the plumber?
Warn them before they handle anything. Provide the product name, time of use and approximate quantity, with a photo of the label if you can take one safely. Do not add any other product, use a plunger or dismantle anything.
